Cosmetic dentistry includes any dental work that improves the appearance of a person's teeth, gums and/or bite, including improving the color, position, and alignment of your teeth, and the overall appearance of your smile. Dr. Wong is highly trained in cosmetic procedures including crowns, natural-looking tooth restorations, and porcelain veneers. She also provides Zoom! teeth whitening and Invisalign® teeth straightening.
What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?
The primary difference between a porcelain veneer and a crown is the amount of natural tooth structure that needs to be replaced. Porcelain veneers are composed of thin ceramic layers that essentially replace tooth enamel. Similar to a contact lens for the eye, a veneer adheres to the outer surface of a tooth. A crown almost, if not entirely, replaces the enamel “cap” of a tooth, down to the gum level. The term “cap” is used synonymously with crown.
Dr. Wong believes in trying to achieve the desired goal with the least amount of damage to your teeth necessary. If enough tooth remains that a veneer can be done, it should be done.
Porcelain veneers are an excellent solution for many aesthetic imperfections such as poor color, shape or contours, fractured teeth, as well as some minor bite related problems. They are also an excellent option for managing superficial stains in teeth not amenable to bleaching. Porcelain crowns are generally necessary when more tooth structure has been lost and therefore more material is needed to replace it. For back teeth that receive greater biting force, newer and stronger “all-ceramic” crowns may be a better alternative.
Can you whiten my discolored or stained teeth?
Zoom! teeth whitening is a widely used, safe and effective bleaching process that lightens teeth that are stained, darkened, or discolored due to age; or from drinking coffee, tea, cola and red wine; or from smoking. It is considered to be the fastest and most effective form of teeth whitening. The process usually takes under an hour from start to finish, but including paperwork and setup, budget your time to spend about an hour and a half in our office.
What’s the benefit of doing teeth whitening in the office?
Dr. Wong performs the Zoom! teeth whitening procedure in her office because that enables her to safely use more powerful bleaching agents, so that you can see the results right away. The procedure begins with a short preparation to safely cover your lips and gums, leaving the teeth exposed. Then, Dr. Wong administers a small amount of sensitivity-reducing gel to make patients as comfortable as possible. Once applied, Dr. Wong or her registered dental assistant applies the Zoom! hydrogen peroxide whitening gel and activates it with a special Zoom! light for 15 minutes. During this time, you can relax, and connect any personal device to our wifi. The gel is usually applied for three 15-minute sessions of light activation, for a total treatment time of 45 minutes.
Does Zoom! teeth whitening hurt?
Some people report teeth sensitivity during the treatment. Rarely, tingling is experienced after the procedure, but always dissipates. Dr. Wong can advise you on pre- and post-treatment options for reducing sensitivity.
